Castro Candaz Ribeira Sacra Mencia 2019Pink peppercorn
This 2019 Castro Candaz is made from 100% Mencia. If you've never had Mencia, think of it as a cross between the bright red fruit of Pinot Noir and the savory, herbal edge of Syrah. It really doesn't taste like another grape, but the illustration can be helpful. It's not planted really any other place in the world besides a bit in Northern Spain and Portugal.
This Castro Candaz leads with notes of bing cherry, fresh raspberries, and sage, and once you get a sip on your palate, a rush of pink peppercorn, rosemary and black tea come forth. This is elegant, and even a wine that's a softer hue in the glass, but there's a surprisingly firm backbone of brisk acidity and steady tannin on the finish. This is a great wine for roast chicken, or vegetables cooked over an open flame. Smoked duck or turkey would be absolute perfection with this one too. I was instantly impressed tasting it, and I think you will be too.
