"I'll take a pallet" is not a typical thing for me to say. A wine has to make a genuine impression on me to spend that kind of capital. But if I know I'll be putting a special wine in the club and shop–one you can't just go out and buy at the store, then that gives me great satisfaction.

Beyond its lovely, classic flavor profile, it was story that drew me to this particular wine. If you've ever had the wines of Château Le Puy, you'll have a window into the style of Closerie du Pelan. In fact the Amoreau family behind Le Puy now is in charge at Pelan. But before that, they just admired the Moro family's farming and winemaking from afar. When they took over a short time ago, they discovered a hidden secret beneath the Château's cellar: decades of unsold vintages tucked away out of sight. I saw that some of the 2010 was available, and immediately tasted it that night. This is fireside Bordeaux. I know because it tastes great next to a roaring fire.
This is the cultish sort of delight that you may have heard of from a sommelier or bartender friend. This is Bordeaux that you actually want to drink, rather than shove into a dusty corner of the cellar and forget about. The aging has already been done for you, in the actual cellar of the Château this wine was made in!
This wine was also made with respect to organic farming, which Pelan received certification for in 2008. Fermented with wild yeasts in large wooden casks, aged in large barrels to preserve structure and fruit, and bottled without fining or filtering.
Closerie du Pelan 2010 presents with a sumptuous nose of dried herbs, supple black and red plum fruit. A touch of currant and fresh juniper sits beneath, with a distinct aroma of loamy, rich earth tying it all together. A bit of leather and funk, too. Not a big fruity west coast wine. A wine that tastes like another century. Coming in from the hunt, the smell of earth on your boots, a pot of something rich and delectable stewing above the fireplace.
